Amnesties: a Multimedia Exhibit of Contemporary Works
Spool Mfg. Contemporary Art Space will open its 2014 exhibition season with a group show entitled Amnesties. Billed as “a multimedia exhibit of contemporary works”, Amnesties will feature collage, drawing, painting, print, ceramic art, installation, and video works. The artists exhibiting are Kyle Balles, Debora Bernagozzi, Jason Bernagozzi, Don Demauro, Justin Frost, Robert Fundis, Aaron A. Harrison, Alexander Leiss, Monteith McCollum, Melissa Mischke, Brian Murphy, and Zach Seeger, a roster comprised almost evenly of Spool Mfg. veterans, and first-time exhibitors.

Amnesties is the fifth in a series of like-named shows for Spool Mfg., the first dating back to 2006. As philosopher and critic Walter Benjamin said, “Every image of the past that is not recognised by the present as one of its own concerns threatens to disappear irretrievably.” It is with this thought in mind that Spool Mfg. attempts to continue its momentum, while regarding its past. With respect for Spool’s decade-long history and foundations, and yet an air of leniency and forgiveness that the name implies, these group shows bring together widely-disparate works to create new discussions, presenting the old with the new in provocative, striking, often jarring, and occasionally comical ways.

The opening reception for Amnesties will take place on Saturday, 15 February 2014, from 7 to 10 pm. The closing reception will be on 15 March 2014, from 7 to 10 pm. Spool Mfg. is located at 138 Baldwin Street, in Johnson City, New York. Gallery hours and group tours are available by appointment via info@spoolmfg.org. All events are free and open to the public.

movies with roots in hell: the effects of drugs on american cinema
world-renowned film scholar jack stevenson brings us 60 hair-raising years of sin and sensation in this entertaining historical retrospective that shows how drugs were depicted in american film from the dawn of cinema through the 1970s. from the giddy silent-era slapstick of mystery of the leaping fish, to the leaden mid-50s moralism of the pusher, and all the way up to the freaked-out psychedelia of rockflow from the late 1960s, it shows how filmmakers have used humor, comedy, fear, sensationalism, and occasionally realism in their treatments. via a selection of short films, trailers and outtakes, we experience the diversity of approaches employed by preachers, educators, entertainers, fear-mongers and hippies who all found drugs to be hot subject matter for the movies. drugs could be used to entertain you, titillate you, and make you fear. drugs could be used as a dramatic device and a way to slip some skin past the censors (for many years in american cinema, a woman could only be shown nude when high on drugs). drugs could get you gunned downed by the cops, drugs could make you hear colors and see music, drugs could blow your mind…

join us on june 9, 2010, at 7 pm, for this exceptionally entertaining program.
