please join us on friday, 29 october 2010, for the opening reception of memento mori: skeletons of the modern world. the reception will run from 7 to 10 pm, and will feature musical performances by driftwood and the slaves.

memento mori examines the qualitative changes in culture through the objects left behind. through the lens of new york's triple cities area, it is an archaeological experience that ascribes neither name nor function to the artifacts, allowing them to serve as memento mori, reminders of death. in remembering our mortality, we consider what our own artifacts will be; and, in so doing, consider the implications of how we choose to live.

gallery hours for memento mori will take place on saturdays (except 12/25/10 and 1/1/11) from noon to 3 pm, or by appointment via this website.

movies with roots in hell: the effects of drugs on american cinema
world-renowned film scholar jack stevenson brings us 60 hair-raising years of sin and sensation in this entertaining historical retrospective that shows how drugs were depicted in american film from the dawn of cinema through the 1970s. from the giddy silent-era slapstick of mystery of the leaping fish, to the leaden mid-50s moralism of the pusher, and all the way up to the freaked-out psychedelia of rockflow from the late 1960s, it shows how filmmakers have used humor, comedy, fear, sensationalism, and occasionally realism in their treatments. via a selection of short films, trailers and outtakes, we experience the diversity of approaches employed by preachers, educators, entertainers, fear-mongers and hippies who all found drugs to be hot subject matter for the movies. drugs could be used to entertain you, titillate you, and make you fear. drugs could be used as a dramatic device and a way to slip some skin past the censors (for many years in american cinema, a woman could only be shown nude when high on drugs). drugs could get you gunned downed by the cops, drugs could make you hear colors and see music, drugs could blow your mind…

join us on june 9, 2010, at 7 pm, for this exceptionally entertaining program.
